The French Duty of Vigilance Law, Loi de Vigilance, in force since 2017, was the first mandatory due diligence law to be adopted. It requires large companies established in France to establish, implement and publish a Vigilance Plan addressing human rights and environmental risks within their own activities as well as those of its controlled subsidiaries, subcontractors and suppliers. The law provides for civil liability as well as public sanctions in case of non-compliance.
